Which of the expressions below is NOT a polynomial? A. (1/3)x + 4 B. 3x2 C. 1/x+ x2 D. 7x4 + 8x2 + 5

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

polynomials are built by multiplication, addition, subtraction...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u need to see the exponents too the polinomials must have integer positive exponents

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

@julian25 the polynomials listed there do show their exponents, just badly formatted. \[\frac{1}{3}x+4\]\[3x^2\]\[\frac{1}{x}+x^2\]\[7x^4+8x^2+5\]

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

@Reganbaughman417 which one of those does not belong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u think that the third is a polinomial?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the third answer

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

that's correct, it is not a polynomial because there is a division by \(x\) which is the same as raising \(x\) to a negative exponent (-1), and negative exponents aren't allowed in polynomials. if it isn't a polynomial for that reason, it's called an algebraic expression...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c is the answers because you cannot have a variable as a denominator so in c, x is the denominator
