explain why an astronaut inside the shuffle feels weightless ness even though the intensity of the earths gravitational field at that height is approximately 9N/kg

because there is no ground pushing up

the question before this b) when a space shuttle is in an orbit at a mean height of 0.33*10^6 m above the surface of the earth, it requires 91 min to complete one orbit. Use this information to obtain a value for the mass of thearth c) Explain why an astronaut inside the shuttle of part b) feels weightless eventhought gravitational field is 9Nkg^-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need proof to show that R = 0 for the weightless to be applicatble

OpenStudy (anonymous):

zaphod, a person in a spaceship orbiting the earth does not feel weightless because the only force acting on him is gravitational force, there is no contact force at all.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the weight = centripetal force.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the reason why the astronaut feels weightlessness is the exact same reason why a person in free fall (i.e no contact force, only gravitational force ) experience weightlessness. However, for the case of the astronaut, he does not "fall" like a person sky diving because the gravitational force acts as the centripetal force and only changes the direction of the tangential velocity.
