OpenStudy (phi):

you have 2(x)+(x)=180 I would start with the idea that the 4 angles in a quadrilateral add up to 360 degrees that means the angles P+Q+R+S= 360 or , putting in the numbers or letters: x + 90 + 2x + 90 = 360 simplify the numbers: 90+90 is 180 , so x + 2x + 180 = 360 add -180 to both sides x + 2x + 180 + -180 = 360 + -180 simplfy the numbers x + 2x = 180

OpenStudy (phi):

you can simplify x + 2x = 180 you have 1 x and add 2 more x's. How many x's do you have ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3X'S

OpenStudy (phi):

so you have 3x= 180 now divide both sides by 3 \[ \frac{3x}{3} = \frac{180}{3} \] on the left side, 3/3 is 1, so it simplifies to just 1*x or just x what do you get on the right side?

OpenStudy (phi):

btw, when you wrote 2(x)+(x)=180 2(30)+(30)= you put in 30 for x in 2x + x =180 to get 2 * 30 + 30 =?180 2 times 30 is 60, so this is: 60+30= ? 180 60 plus 30 is 90 , so this is: 90 = ?180 90 is not equal to 180, so x=30 is not the correct answer. You want x to be a number so this equation is true. if you try with x=60, it will work.
