Can someone help with this? (find the length)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You know BD is 10 and BC is 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use pythagorean theorem

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

You cannot find AD unless AD is also a tangent. Talk to you teacher and verify if the question is correct or not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont have a teacher that can help with this. haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so we can use pythagorean theorem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i used pyth. theorem and i still got an incorrect answer.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

give it a try.... :)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@ganeshie8 wrote "You cannot find AD unless AD is also a tangent. Talk to you teacher and verify if the question is correct or not." Why not? BCD is a right triangle. ACD is a right triangle. AB = CD = radius. Use Pythagoras theorem twice.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??? o: How would i set that up twice?? o:

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

ohh yes !!! we can find AD i completely missed that :\

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So how do we do that? o:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its 6^2+10^2

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Triangle BCD is a right triangle with leg BC= 6, hyp BD = 10, leg CD = unknown. Use the Pythaagoras theorem to get CD.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

136

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you square root that

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Once you have CD, look at right triangle ACD with leg CD already known, leg AC = 2AB = 12, and hyp AD unknown. Use the Pythagors theorem to find AD.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2^2+12^2= like that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

148

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

No. BC^2 + CD^2 = BD^2 6^2 + CD^2 = 10^2 CD^2 = 100 - 36 = 64 CD = 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im lost..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6^2+10^2=10^2 6^2+10^2=10^2 10^2=100-36=64

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@ashleyvee I'll explain it to you. Just follow along and answer my questions. Ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok..

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Because CD is a tangent, BC and CD are perpendicular.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

That means triangle BCD is a right triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

AC is a diameter that includes BC, so AC is also perpendicular to CD. So traingle ACD is also a right triangle.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

AB is a raduis and BC is a radius. All radii in a circle are congruent, so AB = BC = 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my answer is 4 square root 13. thanks for trying i guess.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

That's correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The tangent to a circle always forms a right triangle with the radius which means angle ACD = BCD = 90 degrees = right angle. Applying the pythagorean theorem gives us side CD because we already know that BC = radius = 6: |dw:1372352530232:dw| Now we observe that we can follow through and solve this problem using a number of ways but the best way would be to apply pythagorean theorem. We know AC = AB + BC = 12 and CD = 8, apply the pythagorean theorem and solve for AD. @ashleyvee
