add 21.4+ (-23.9)

OpenStudy (rmrjr22):

21.4-23.9 = ?

OpenStudy (rmrjr22):

hint... its going to be negative

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

Ok so when we have 2 signs in a row: ++ = + +- = - -+ = - - - = +

OpenStudy (swissgirl):

So we have 21.4- 23.9 Ok so the rule is if you have 2 numbers with 2 different signs then you subtract the 2 numbers and keep the sign of the bigger number So in our case we have 2 number with 2 different signs we have a 21.4 which is positive and -23.9 which is negative. So we would subtract the 2 numbers like you would normally do and then keep the sign of the bigger number which is negative in this case

OpenStudy (mertsj):

When adding two numbers whose signs are not the same, subtract the absolute values. Give the answer the sign of the number whose absolute value is greatest.
