Explain why water is considered to be the best solvent in the world.

OpenStudy (zale101):

because water binds with hydrogen bonds and has a strong polarity, it makes it easier to dissolve with other substances that are polar.

OpenStudy (zale101):

Water properties--Understand what's: Water has high heat capacity for energy absorption and release Water have adhesion and Cohesion Water is polar, so it dissolves many kinds of molecules water have a density maximum (e.g Ice)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Water is called the universal solvent because more substances dissolve in water than in any other chemical. This has to do with the polarity of each water molecule. The hydrogen side of each water (H2O) molecule carries a slight positive electric charge, while the oxygen side carries a slight negative electric charge. This helps water dissociate ionic compounds into their positive and negative ions. The positive part of an ionic compound is attracted to the oxygen side of water while the negative portion of the compound is attracted to the hydrogen side of water.

OpenStudy (zale101):

For example on how water is a good solvent. Let's say salt dissolves with water. Sodium and Chloride atoms are dissociated from the salt crystal and surrounding by water molecules which hydrates.
