Select the answer that has the steps in correct order to prove the following using indirect proof. Given: m∠PQR ≠ m∠RQS Prove: –→QR does not bisect ∠PQS

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

How far did you get with this? Were you able to understand what they meant by an indirect proof?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I have no idea what they mean I'm just trying to get through

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, you know what a proof is at least?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

In a direct proof, you go through the steps and tada it all matches at the end. In an indirect proof, you go through all the stems and then, OOPS! this is not that case and therefore it is true that this is NOT that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

So think about that order: This is true! These are the steps to prove that. Hey! This is NOT that! Therefore, it is TRUE that this is NOT that! Which of your answers follows that indirect form?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The top left one?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Close... that is one of two that people might think are right. However, there is an issue. It goes from this is true to this is not true, then it does the steps to prove it is true. See how that is not quite the correct order?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is the contradiction whats wrong?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The order. You are looking for: This is true! These are the steps to prove that. Hey! This is NOT that! Therefore, it is TRUE that this is NOT that! And in this problem, "Hey! This is NOT that!" is "Contadiction of \(m\measuredangle PQR\ne m\measuredangle RQS \)"

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

That is because of the meaning of the word contradiction. They use the simple meaning here. If I contradict you, I am saying you are wrong. In this math problem, the contradiction is saying, "This is wrong," or "This is NOT that proof!"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh ok thank you

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

So, have a better choice now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahh I just picked my choice and submitted my test, but I picked the bottom left.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Kk...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Was that wrong? I got a 95 so I guess it doesn't matter but for future reference

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yes, it was the bottom left.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what I picked
