The lengths of the sides of a rectangle become 3 times greater than the original measurements. Which statement is true about the rectangle? Its area becomes 3 times greater, and perimeter becomes 9 times greater. Its area becomes 6 times greater, and perimeter becomes 3 times greater. Its area becomes 3 times greater, and perimeter becomes 6 times greater. Its area becomes 9 times greater, and perimeter becomes 3 times greater.

Recall that the area of a rectangle is equal to its length times its width, or LW. If you triple both, you get a new area of (3L)(3W) or 9LW. So the area becomes 9 times bigger. The perimeter is equal to 2L + 2W. If you triple both, you get a new perimeter of 2(3L) + 2(3W) = 6L + 6W, which is 3 times greater.
