What does the x in y=mx+b stand for?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

x is the independent variable; the variable upon who's change the value of y depends.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Choices are: A. y-intercept of the line B. slope of the line C. x-intercept of the line D. solution of the line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y-Is the y in the x,y x-is the x in the x,y m-is slop

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It seems to me like the answer they want is C. but that is not correct at all, its just the only answer I could see someone with no idea of what they are talking about saying x is. @TuringTest gave a good answer of what x really means (IE: depends on what the graph is representing.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they said it was the slope which is wrong

OpenStudy (jhannybean):

Think about when you're given a point (x,y) and you're trying to find the y-intercept of the line. you plug in your point into the value of x, yes? For example - given point (3,1) and m= 2, looking for the equation of a line in slope intercept form We start by plugging in points (3,1) into our x and y values to find what the y-intercept of the line is. 1 = 2(3) +b Now we'll solve for b which is our y-intercept. So What @TuringTest said falls into this understanding that it changes depending on they-value. in our case, we use it to find the value of our y-intercept (b)

Yeah, x is is no wayt the slope. M is the slope. Who gave this question?
