Choose the correct classification of 2x^4 − 8x^5 − 2x^2 + 5. 5th degree polynomial 4th degree polynomial 11th degree polynomial 12th degree polynomial

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*usually*.. highest exponent = degree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 4th degree?

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Yes ^^ Whatever your highest number degree is in your polynomial is the degree of the whole thing.

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

It help if you rearrange the equation and make the degrees go from highest to lowest.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you :)

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

It's not your 1st degree (sometimes it can be) It's your highest. Although you have 2x^4 − 8x^5 − 2x^2 + 5. Highest to lowest it is -8x^5+2x^4-2x^2+5. So it is a 5th degree polynomial.

You are very much welcome.
