Factor x2 − 4x + 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

impossible the normal way..try quadratic formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it prime?

hero (hero):

a + b = -4 ab = 5 Find a and b. Good luck.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=-b+or-sqrt b^2 -4ac/2a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

quadratic formula :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

math error with quad formula

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh hmm wat other way is there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

none. so it is prime?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk...but..u should check ur question again///

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is the right question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well um wait let me try something. give me a minute :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://www.purplemath.com/modules/solvquad.htm try reading this. it should help :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

O-O I havent done quadric formula yet so...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh well its pretty easy all u do is basically just plug in values so, for example a=1 b= -4 c=5 in ur question so u just plug it in this formula :)....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

quadratic formula does not work

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah...

hero (hero):

@britanny_ did you find a or b yet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh well i have no idea wat else u could use :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its not possible

hero (hero):

Never say never

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i didnt say never! :o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Hero lol XD oh my god dude u just made my day :)

hero (hero):

How?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

never say never XD

hero (hero):

Only as it applies to math. It doesn't apply to personal relationships, so don't get your hopes up.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just think its impossible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ok :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont think u can factor it :/

hero (hero):

a + b = -4 ab = 5 @physicsboffin It is impossible to solve this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do this question...i want to learn

OpenStudy (anonymous):

me too

hero (hero):

lol, it is doable for sure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then can u please explain? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah @Hero ...we're watin lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

hero (hero):

I've solved plenty just like this before.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just do it..already

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think ur just bluffing to waste our time :p

hero (hero):

I'm honestly not bluffing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then solve it already !!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wats taking so long?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

hero (hero):

Just hang on a minute. I can't type and solve at the same time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we dont want u 2 type...just solve it..giving u 15 minutes

hero (hero):

a = -2 + i b = -2 - i

hero (hero):

a + b = -2 + i - 2 - i = (-2 -2) + i - i = -4 + 0 = -4 ab = (-2 + i)(-2 - i) = -2(-2 + i) -i(-2 + i) = 4 -2i + 2i -i^2 = 4 - (-i)^2 = 4 + 1 = 5

hero (hero):

I told you it was possible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what are the factors?

hero (hero):

x^2 − 4x + 5 x^2 + (-2 - i)x + (-2 + i)x + 5 x(x -2 - i) + (-2 + i)(x - 2 - i) (x - 2 - i)(x -2 + i)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i see what u did there. u used i as in imaginary number. so overall good job but can we put the i as in the final answer?

hero (hero):

x^2 - 4x + 5 = (x - 2 - i)(x - 2 + i) You can do that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok :) i understand now. thanks. sorry for doubting ur skills sir. :)

hero (hero):

I just knew that it was solveable. The truth is, any trinomial of two degree is factorable.

hero (hero):

The funny thing is, you still don't know how I solved it. I wanted it to be that way.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i do know how u solved it! :)

hero (hero):

Not really. You don't know the method I used though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i still understand what u did there :)

hero (hero):

This was a very easy one to do. These get much more difficult. You would need to know the method in order to figure it out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh is this from college algebra? because im taking that next year

hero (hero):

Negative. You won't learn this in college algebra.

hero (hero):

Do you want to learn the method?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok :) the thing is that im really nervous about next year because i have to take a lot of advanced classes in math, physics, chem, history etc on college level and im just kinda confused here and there. and yea sure :)

hero (hero):

We can use one that has actual zeroes like x^2 + 6x + 7

hero (hero):

Hang on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok :)
