OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

For 11. There is an open circle on a number. What number is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

theres no number but i guess its one

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Correct it's one. there is no need to guess because later there is number 5 and you can see the tick marks. The open circle is on 1. The line is to the right side of 1 and points right. What do you think that means? Are numbers to the right of 1 greater or less than 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

less than

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Really? To the right of 1 are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, etc. Are these numbers greater than or less than 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh my bad greater than :)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

|dw:1373322131460:dw|

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Good. So you see that the drawing is pointing to numbers greater than 1, since the line goes on to the right forever. One more question. There is an open circle on the number 1. Not a closed circle, like you see in problem 12. What do you think the open circle on 1 means as opposed to a closed circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhh it has to do with the symbol

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The open circle means the number 1 itself is not included. That means all numbers greater than 1, but not 1 itself. A closed circle would mean 1 is included, so it would be all numbers greater than or equal to 1.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The answer to 1 is all numbers greater than 1. Which answer is that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Great.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Now you want to do 12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Once again, what number is the closed circle on?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Good. Since it's a closed circle, the number -1 is included. The line points left. Look at the numbers to the left of -1, for example, -2, -3, -4, -5, etc. All these numbers are leess than -1.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Would you care to pick the answer from the 4 choices?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it b

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Exaclty. You're 2 for 2. Good job!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are a great teacher thank you

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You're welcome, and thanks.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good Job @mathstudent55 You Are Very Good At Explaining :)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

@So1D Thanks.
