what is 7/10- 7/15?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

When subtracting or adding fractions...you need to first find the LCD *Least common denominator* so what number...is divisible by both 10 and 15?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

No you're thinking what goes into 10 and 15 evenly....but you need to find what number both 10 and 15 go into evenly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30?

hero (hero):

Hint: \[\frac{7}{10} \dot\ \frac{3}{3} - \frac{7}{15} \dot\ \frac{2}{2}\]

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Sorry for the leave...yes 30 would be correct...so you then multiply the entire fraction 7/10 by 3...to get 10 to go to 30....so that would be \[\frac{ 7 }{10 } \times \frac{ 3 }{ 3 } = \frac{ 21 }{ 30 }\] And multiply that second fraction by 2 to get 15 to go to 30 \[\frac{ 7 }{15 } \times \frac{ 2 }{ 2 } = \frac{ 14 }{ 30 }\] So now you have \[\frac{ 21 }{ 30 } - \frac{ 14 }{ 30 }\] When both fractions have a common denominator...you just simply write this as \[\frac{ 21 - 14 }{ 30 }\] So...what is 21 - 14?
