What is a passing score? I am currently making a 97.54 in my English course and I all I have left to take is the exam. I was wondering if someone could help me figure out the lowest score I could make on my exam while still making an overall score of at least a 90. (This is just in curiosity) The reason I've come to open study is because I don't understand the grading chart, but I do remember someone from here once telling me the right answer - so I figured I'd ask again.
does it say how much weight this exam has?
ex: this exam is 10% of your grade
It doesn't, and that is one of the parts that had me confused because all I have to go by is the little chart.
and that's the only chart of info it gives?
yeah, when I click on my grade book, that's all it shows I can see. I was looking around to see if I could find something that would give me and idea, but that is all I have.
alright let me think
It depends on how much the test is worth, and clearly many other factors, the teacher could decide to curve the test, to weight it differently, to do a variety of different things.
let's consider a very extreme scenario if the final exam is 90% of your grade, then 0.9754*(1 - 0.9) + 0.9x = 0.9 and solving for x gives you x = 0.8916222222 which means you need to get at least an 89.16% on the final if the final is worth 90% of your grade
I'm sure the final is definitely not as high as 90% of your grade, but you get an idea of which score to get (at least) and you know you'll be safe and be over 90% overall
I like that example! Thank you. I will definitely keep that in mind.
you're welcome your best bet of course is to ask the teacher (because s/he may grade on a curve)
I understand. I am in the middle of my exam (online course) and I saw a few questions I was unsure of so it made me curious, but hopefully if I do even make a lower grade I should be safe. Thanks for the detailed answer!
sure thing and good luck
Thank you very much
you're welcome
