what is work?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In general work is the energy transferred to or from an object by means of a force acting on the object

OpenStudy (kropot72):

Work can be regarded as energy in action. The work done by a force is the product of the force and the distance moved by its point of application along the line of action of the force. Some examples of work are: Work done by a tensile force in stretching a piece of wire. Work is done by a gas when it expands against a hydrostatic pressure. The SI unit of work is the joule, being the work performed when a force of 1 newton moves its point of application through 1 meter along the line of action of the force. Also when 1 watt of power is expended for 1 second, 1 joule of work is done.

work is done when a force causes a displacement. w=f.d

OpenStudy (jmark):

The transfer of energy from one physical system to another, especially the transfer of energy to a body by the application of a force that moves the body in the direction of the force. More about physics at http://physics.tutorvista.com/

work is done by a force. work is defined as |dw:1373377055534:dw| \[W=\int\limits_{A}^{B}F.dl\] F and dl are vectors.
