The weight of male Americans between the ages of 18 and 25 is normally distributed, with a mean of 164.5 lb and a standard deviation of 26 lb. One definition of obesity states that a person is obese if the z-score of his or her weight is greater than 2. What is the obesity threshold weight for a young adult American male? Round your answer to the nearest tenth.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what is: 164.5 + 2(26) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

216.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would that be the answer?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

id hope so lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried that but was unsure. Perhaps im doubting something.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks Pal!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

in this case, 1 zscore = 26 2 zscores above the mean is therefore: mean + 2(26)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hey, do you know hyow to use a z table?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

only half of it ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have z = -1.2 and .85

OpenStudy (amistre64):

look on the left side for 1.2, and look at the top for .00 where they cross is a value and again look on the left side for 0.8, and look at the top for .05 where they cross is another value

OpenStudy (amistre64):

do yo have a ztable with you or do you need to look one up on the google?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why 0.5 and 0.8 please justify it

OpenStudy (amistre64):

.05 and .8

OpenStudy (amistre64):

thats just the way a z table is constructed

OpenStudy (amistre64):

to top row represent the .0x value of the z score the left column represents that n.x value of the zscore

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also. i dont have 0.85 on my z table

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know you add the values to get the value that falls in the graph
