Please name the numbers.

??

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Why do I always get that response to that question?! Do you know the numbers? No! Then you must call them something until you do. L = The lesser number G = The greater Number There, I just named the numbers. Now we can talk about them. Translate the problem statement. "One number is 7 more than twice another." Find an expression involving L and G that means the same thing. "If their difference is 22" Find an expression involving L and G that means the same thing. "what is the larger number" Okay, we need G.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

x = one number y = the other number x = 2y + 7 x - y = 22 now sub 2y + 7 in for x in the 2nd equation, then solve for y. Can you do that ?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Now, see! What was the first thing @texaschic101 did? Named the Numbers! It is a GREAT place to start. However, since we need 'x' (the greater of the 2), it may be wiser to solve for that, first, rather than y.

ya i get it now

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Excellent. Never forget? What does the problem statement want? Whatever it is, NAME IT! :-)
