What would you predict about a chemical that has a hydrogen ion concentration of 1 × 10−12 M? It will form salt and water when added to a base. It contains no hydroxide ions. It has high concentration of hydroxide ions. It has a sour taste.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know it's not the second, but I'm not sure about the rest.

thomaster (thomaster):

Determine the pH to find out if it's an acid or a base. \(\Large pH=-log[H^+]\) your \(H^+=1*10^{-12}\)

thomaster (thomaster):

Did you solve the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I went with it having higher hydroxide ions.

thomaster (thomaster):

Yea wen you calculate the pH with the equation i gave, you'll know the pH of the chemical is 12, which means it's highly basic. So it has a high hydroxide ion concentration.
