Part 1: Using complete sentences, explain how to find the equation of the line, in standard form and slope–intercept form, passing through (–1, 5) and (1, 9). Part 2: Compare the benefits of writing an equation in standard form to the benefits of writing an equation in slope–intercept form.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I can do part one on my own but im lost on part two. I never use standard form....

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

standard form ax - b = 5 slope-intercept form b = ax - 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you, but i just don't know any benefits of using standard form

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Jamierox4ev3r can you help me, since you know about standard form?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

yes sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Jamierox4ev3r

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

lol srry my laptop is crappy

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

the standard form equation is AX + BY=C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its cool my computer tends to crash a lot so it looks like im offline when im really still here just yelling at my monitor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, I follow so far

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

in order to put in standard form, you must calculate the slope and y-intercept. Can you do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah gimme a sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

slope is 2 y-intercept is 7

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

good!

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

you would then set up your equation y=2x+7 and multiply all the terms by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why multiply?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

it makes everything have a common factor in case you convert it back to the other form

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay thanks!

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

then when you multiply, it adds up to 2y=4x+14

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

quickly manipulate it and you get 2y-4x=14

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

that is standard form :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay I see that, awesome!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but is still don't know how to do part two of this problem because I don't know any benefits of standard form

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

ah that i can do too :)Well, the advantage that the standard form has over slope-intercept form is that EVERY linear equation can be written in standard form, but not every linear equation can be written in slope-intercept form.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

do you understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when can an equation not be written in slope intercept?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

when the slope is vertical/ unidentified

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay, thank you soooo much!
