look what i say below before you answer! What is the vertex for the function? y = x2 - 4x - 3 (-1, 2) (0, -3) (1, -6) (2, -7)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i know how to find one vertex but since -b2(2a) would i make that -4 be a positive 4 cause neg.*neg. is positive? @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it should be x = -b/(2a)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

in this case, b = -4 and a = 1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you are correct, the negative b will turn -4 into positive 4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so what is the x coordinate of the vertex?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just a sec. ill tell you

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

alright

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now that you know the x coordinate of the vertex is x = 2, plug it into the equation to find y

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

this will give you the y coordinate of the vertex

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure thing
