What's the difference between an alcohol and alkanol? Some sources say they're the same thing, others say all alkanols are alcohols but not all alcohols are alkanols. Confirmation please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alkanols and Alcohols are approximately the same. Alcohols are compounds that have hydroxy groupings. this include alkanols, phenols, arylalcohos. the only difference i could see between these two is that alkanols are alcohols that have just alkane and hydroxy group. but alcohos include aryl systems, alkene system, alkyne system too.. but on the whole, these two are approximately the same.

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

Phenols are not alcohols because alcohols must have the -OH group on a tetrahedral carbon.

oh is it? i never knew that i think you are right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So is there a difference between the two?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, a small one. alkanol will contain just alkane and hydroxy groups, but the term alcohol will include alcohols like |dw:1373965959852:dw|
