Using complete sentences, explain why it is necessary to have common denominators when adding or subtracting rational expressions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does it say how many sentences it has to be?

what theee

Didn't I just answer this for you yesterday?

News flash. More generally, one must have common UNITS in order to add. What is 3 dogs increased by 2 cats?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No you didnt and just a couple sentences like 3.

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

Think of a pie with constant diameter. If you have 3 pieces out of 6-slice pie and compare to 4 pieces out of 10-slice pie, how can you tell if 3 is more pie than 4 unless you can compare both pies to another with the same number of total pieces, like say the 30 slices. Then the 3 slices in a 6-slice pie is equivalent to 15 slices in the 30-slice pie and 4 pieces from the 10-slice pie is equivalent to 12 slices in the 30-slice pie. So then 3/6 > 4/10 and if you're really hungry, you should go for the 3 pieces.
