complete the solution of the equation. find the value of y when x equals 15. -x+2y=-1

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

This is one of the more basic things you need to know about algebra so pay close attention :) \[\Large -\color{red}x +2\color{blue}y = -1\]

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

You are given \[\Large \color{red}x = \color{red}{15}\] Right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

What you do is *replace* all the x's in your equation with 15. Like so: \[\Large -\color{red}{15}+2\color{blue}y = -1\]

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Are you following so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Now, your task is to solve for the value of y... any idea how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

The first thing you need to do is bring ALL the terms without y to one side (to the right side) and all the terms WITH y to the left side. Now, this term: \[\Large -15 \boxed{\color{green}{+2y}}= -1\]is the only term with y. While these terms...\[\Large \boxed{\color{orange}{-15}}+2y = \boxed{\color{orange}{-1}}\] do not have y, and thus belong on the right-side. -15 is still on the left, so how do you bring it to the right side?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

You think? LOL I asked you a question.... how do you bring that -15 to the correct (right) side?
