Lysander was a Spartan military and naval commander during the Peloponnesian War. He gained victory for the Greek-city states through two key battles. First, he defeated the Athenian fleet at Aegospotami in 405 B.C. He then captured Athens in 404 B.C., which ended the war. For a short while after, Lysander was the most powerful man in Greece. However, his penchant for aligning with local tyrants may have done him in. He was not popular in Sparta and was unable to make himself ruler of that city. He eventually was killed battling the Boeotians in 395 B.C.
