Hey Ive been struggling with the determination of the parent chain. I found an article that shows the steps to determine the parent chain. Here: http://www.acdlabs.com/iupac/nomenclature/79/r79_933.htm#ID_73zo0o There c) says we look at the lenght, but then in e) they dont even follow that rule ( c) ) and just ignore it! Instead of taking the longest chain in e) they take another chain which is not the longest! Does someone have any idea on what the problem here is? Im really fed up with this naming stuff, because I cant seem to understand it. Thanks!!

e) but that is the longest chain

Try to get ahold of David Klein's Organic Chemistry as a second language, has great coverage on the basics and lots of practice problems, it's easily understandable, too!
