Just need someone to check over my work.. Balance the following oxidation-reduction reaction and indicate which atoms have undergone oxidation and reduction. ____HNO3 + ____S arrow ____NO + ____H2SO4 okay so I have balanced the equation to 2HNO3 + S = 2 NO + H2SO4 but I'm not sure how to indicate which atoms have undergone oxidation and reduction? Thanks

OpenStudy (festinger):

Oxidation is the gain of oxygen, loss of electrons or gain in oxidation state. Reduction is the loss of oxygen, gain of electrons or reduction in oxidation state. Here, I can see that N in NO3 loses 2 oxyen and it's oxidation state goes from +5 to +2, a reduction. Suplur gains oxygen to form SO4, and oxidation from +0 to +6,

sulphur. Sulfur. Either one, same thing, different spelling. Suplur is a spelling mistake.
