Can anybody please help me with this? Which of the following pairs of elements is least likely to be held together by a covalent bond? A. O and C B. O and N C. Mg and O D. O and Cl

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. O & C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you please explain?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

if the electronegativity differences between those atoms is less than 1.7 between the two elements then the bond is more covalent in nature

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So A is the correct answer?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

least likely to be held together by a covalent bond? try to understand this mean which is not a covalent in this they are asking

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

electronetavity of O = 3.5 for C its = 2.5 for N it is = 3.0 for Cl it is =3.0 for mg =1.2 can u find the difference between their electronegativity for example O and C =3.5-2.5 =1<1.6 its covalent like this do for the rest

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

RH are u getting it or No?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I am, and Mg and O is the correct answer right?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yup :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks!

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

u r welcome
