i need help please answer Find the difference of (−5x2 − 4x3 − 3) − (9x3 + 3x − 8x2). Be sure to show all of your work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are those X's or multiplication signs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x's

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So -5x2 is -10x am I correct in this thinking?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it's polynomials, do you have to foil the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So does -5x2 mean -5 * x ^ 2? Sorry I'm just trying to figure out how the problem is written. But you do not have to foil the problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no if you have 2x^3 +2x^2 it does not equal 4x^5 it stays as it is because they are not like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got you, sorry how you wrote it was a little confusing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thts alright

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You could rewrite the problem as (-4x^3 - 9x^3) + (-5x^2 - -8x^2) - (3x) + (-3) So all of the terms are with their corresponding x powers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right and from there add like terms i worked it out and got -13x^3+3x^2-3x-3 but i wasn't quite sure if it was right or not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup that's right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sweet thts what i wanted to hear thnks dude

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem :)
