Solve the inequality: -x+3>7 I need someone to show me step by step how to solve this. I will give you a medal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know the answer, so all i need is to learn how to solve it.

OpenStudy (psymon):

Well, you need to get x on one side, by itself, of the inequality. We do this by moving things that are with x to the other side of the inequality. You have to do opposite operations to do that. If you have a +3, you minus 3 from both sides. If you have 3x, you divide both sides by 3, all of the opposites you can do to get x by itself. So to start, we get the +3 away from x. Since this is a + 3, you have to subtract 3, from both sides, to remove it. \[-x + 3 > 7\] \[-x + 3 -3 > 7 - 3\] \[-x > 4\] Does that first step make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now you have to switch the sign right?

OpenStudy (psymon):

Alright then. Now for the last step I personally say we have two options, simply because this is an inequality. So to get that negative away from x, we have to divide both sides by -1. But when you divide or multiply both sides of an inequality by a negative number, the inequality has to flip in the opposite direction. \[-x > 4\] \[\frac{ -x }{ -1 } > \frac{ 4 }{ -1 }\] \[x < -4\] Now if you feel like you might forget to flip the inequality, you can always do this: \[-x>4\] \[-x+x>4+x\] \[0>4+x\] \[-4>-4+4+x\] \[-4>x\] Of course this isnt necessary, but it is a way to get rid of the negative without worrying ab out forgettign to flip the signs around.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anytime you multiply or divide you switch your signs

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Maxicat , i thought you only switch your signs if your dividing both sides by a negative

OpenStudy (psymon):

Only if you multiply or divide by a negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by a neg. sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you doing 5.06 flvs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ditto lol.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ave you done the collaboration thing for algebra, i havent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

have*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah the easiest way to do it is sign sign up for the live lesson, then your done. Live lessons count as collaborative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know how to sign up?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yea, so i did that already,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i use to go to all the live lessons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your good to go then, you met the criteria

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thanks, math is my worst subject, everything else im good with, if you need any help you could just message me if you want

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what grade you in?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9th

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks, you too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

our welcome, im in 11th, so just message if you need help :)
