You use the Pythagorean Theorem Which is \[a ^{2}+b ^{2}=c ^{2}\]
C would be your X
can you help me with setting it up? @OpenSessame
Is 20 the side length or the angle? Your diagram makes it look like the angle, in which case you don't want to use pytagoras.
20 degrees is the angle
ok. sin(20) = 19 / x Solve for x. Remember sin is opposite side / hypotenuse.
im sorry but im so confused and I really suck at math
No problem. Important concept: sin(angle) = opposite side / hypotenuse. Pretend like you are standing in the 20 degree angle. 19 is the opposite side, x is the hypotenuse. sin(20) = 19 / x multiply both sides by x xsin(20) = 19 divide both sides by sin(20) x = 19 / sin(20) = put that in your calculator = 55.5

The formula you'll want to understand and recall for this one is tan(angle) = opposite / adjacent Can you take it from there?
nope!!!!!! I need as much help if you can
To approach the runway, a pilot of a small plane must begin a 10 descent starting from a height of 1983 feet above the ground. To the nearest tenth of a mile, how many miles from the runway is the airplane at the start of this approach? |dw:1376017500374:dw|
