Why is the ionization constant of water Kw so helpful when determining the concentration of an acid or base?

OpenStudy (frostbite):

The answer is found in my \(\href{study#/updates/52178723e4b0450ed75ed4f5}{\sf previous ~ answer}\) when you asked about the constant for water's auto-ionization. If we know the hydroxide \(\sf OH^{-}\) concentration we can determine the \(\sf H^{+}\) concentration and vice versa.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Because water is neutral. Anything above water is considered basic, anything below water is considered acidic.
