Why is steel denser than water but yet steel ships float?

OpenStudy (alienium):

it doesn't have to do with density ;) it's about the actual construction of the ships ever heard of Archimedi's law ? that's why they ship... no matter how much weight you put on a ship or how much it actually waits, it all has to do with pressure. If gravity + weight and other 'down vectors' are greater then the archimedi's force calculated for that weight... then the ship drowns, otherwise it floats

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

LOL Its called bouyancy. the water pushed up on all the surface area of the steel that is under water. The water displaced = volume of the steel

OpenStudy (alienium):

^ that put simple... thanx Kawaii ;)

OpenStudy (ookawaiioo):

Yeah no problem!!
