The first stage of a rocket burns 28 seconds longer than the second stage. If the total burning time for both stages is 152 seconds then how long does each stage burn? So, how do you solve this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let the second stage = x and the first stage equal x+28 since it burns 28 seconds more. You know the total is 152 seconds, and the first stage plus the second should equal the total. Therefore x+x+28 should equal 152 and from there you should be able to solve for x.
