why did you multiply when the instruction above says to look for an exponent to divide by

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you basically want ot get rid of the number on that side, but when you multiply 5 to the 1-2x by 5 to the 2x-1, you subtract the exponents, soit's sort of like dividing by that number (x/x = 1)
