for 5-(1,2-dimethylpropyl)-3,7-diethyl-2-methyldecane why does dimethylpropyl come before the other two, arent you suppose to not include the di's when alphabetizing in order??

OpenStudy (abb0t):

They are in parenthesis. Two i-butanes are on C5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

same thing for : 4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6-ethyl-2,3,5-trimethylocatane i can name all others in order but for some reason these arent making sense like i thought you take off the di^ so then ethyl should come before methylethyl, then methylocatane

OpenStudy (abb0t):

It means that is is not part of the main carbon chain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so when do i know to put them in order then when im alphabetizing everything else during nomenclature?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

It's like CH\(_3\)CH\(_2\)CH\(_2\)(CH\(_3\))\(_2\)CH\(_2\)CH\(_2\)CH\(_3\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for example: 4,7-diethyl-2,3,5-trimethyl-6-(1-methylpropyl)decane this makes sense, (di) ethyl first, then (tri) methyl, then methylpropyl, <<< follows the alphabetizing order

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6-ethyl-2,3,5-trimethylocatane

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is that, but i dont know how to know why i put dimethylethyl first :(?
