You'll note the bulk of his speech is an effort to connect the struggle at the time, the Civil War, with the lofty and inspirational ideals of the Founders, that a nation conceived in liberty, dedicated to and so forth and so on. So he is trying to make the argument that the appalling slaughter all around them was, somehow, worth it, because it was in support of old and cherished ideals, and that it was an existential struggle -- that if the Civil War was not won by the North, the entire edifice of what the United States meant would tumble down. It's a pretty classic motivational speech. A CEO could make it during a big sales drive, and Presidents have made them during wars. Ironically enough, the President of the Confederacy could also have made it, and probably adopted most of it word for word. The Gettysburg Address is unusual in its heartfelt and eloquent simplicity, not in its purposes or insight.
