Choose the system of equations which matches the following graph. a) x – 2y = 8 2x + 4y = 12 b) x – 2y = 8 2x – 4y = 12 c) x + 2y = 8 2x + 4y = 12 d) x + 2y = 8 2x – 4y = 12
@AkashdeepDeb please help
If you look in the graph you'll see that the 2 lines are parrallel. right?
yes
Do you know how to identify parallrllines from the equations given?
nope
@AkashdeepDeb
Do you know that this is the standard for of 2 given equations? A1x+ B1y + C1 = 0 A2x + B2x + C2 = 0
yes
You need to know some rules to solve these questions then. In the 2 equations I have mentioned above... If A1/A2 is not equal to B1/B2 then the lines intersect at one point. If A1/A2 is equal to B1/B2 and not equal to C1/C2 the lines r parallel. If A1/A2 = B1/B2 = C1/C2 then they're the same lines. Getting this? :)
yea kinda
Okay, I want you to write all the equations in Standard form. And tell me which one is a parallel line.
I can tell you another way. Do you want that?
yea
by seeing the graph, you can just use their x- and y- intercepts..
Find the slope of the parallel lines in the graph. Can you do that? :)
@AkashdeepDeb by putting the equation in standard form i set them equal to 0 right?
i don't know how to do that
Yes but this is the new method I am teching you now. Stop the previous one. Tell me if you know how to find the slope of a line. RISE/RUN.
i'm not good with this stuff
so i need help
No problemo. Do you know what RISE/RUN is?
yea
If I give you 2 POINTS can you find their slope then?
i'll need help to find the slope
@babyblue123 can you determine the interceps by seeing the graph alone?
@Jaseem18 i don't understand what u just asked me
RULES. If you have 2 points of a line say (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) Then the slope of the line m = RISE/RUN = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) RULE 2. Two parallel lines have the same slope becuase they are inclined similarly. Getting this?
yes
you do not understand about intercepts .. oh sorry about that
i think Akash will just help you on this .. since he started ..
@Jaseem18 yes its ok i really suck a math specially with graphs
Okay. So now can you find 2 points on the graphic you attached. I just want 2 points of the bottm line.
(3,1)
I want 2 points. And if we go 3 to the right and 1 up. The point is not on the line.
ok 2 to the right and 1 up
the point is (2,2)
yes. Any other hold on.
ummm
4 to the left and 3 up point is (-4,5)
Hold on I'll draw it and give you a solution. But you have to promise me you'll go through what EVER I WROTE here once more. Then only will you understand this.
okay
i promise
Okay, good. Then just go through this now. I'll post in 2 minutes. :)
okay =D
Tell me if you understood till here. :)
Find which are the ONLY 2 EQUATIONS [One option] Which have the same slope as -1/2 Understood? :)
