Which of the following statements are true? A.during active transport , material may be moved from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration. B.During passive transport, energy is used to move materials against a concentration gradient. C.During active transport, water is pumped across a membrane to equalize the concentration of salts on both sides. D.During passive transport, osmosis allows salts to move from one side of the membrane to the other to equalize concentrations on both sides.

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

A

thomaster (thomaster):

@shrutipande9 could you explain why B C and D are wrong? It's a little bit too easy to just say the answer is A, who says you're right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think A is right .. wt u say @Ryaan ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

option B is wrng bcoz During passive transport energy is not used. m nt sure about option C Option D,During passive transport, osmosis allows Solvent molecules (not salts) to move from one side of the membrane to the other..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just guessing... m not sure...

Active Transport: Movement across membrane with an energy cost (usually against concentration or electrochemical gradient, but not always) Used to pump specific compounds in or out of the cell Requires energy to overcome the concentration and electrochemical gradient or to allow a large or charged particle to cross membrane Requires specific integral membrane proteins Can be saturated like facilitated diffusion proteins The energy requirement distinguishes active transport from facilitated diffusion Osmosis, the Passive Transport of Water Osmosis = the diffusion of water across a semi-permeable membrane Plasma membrane permeable to water but not to solute Solute = dissolved particle Solvent = liquid medium in which particles may be dissolved If a solute does not readily cross a plasma membrane, it is called an osmotically active solute Water moves from solution with lower concentration of osmotically active solutes (i.e. the concentration of water is high) to solution with higher concentration of osmotically active solutes (i.e. the concentration of water is low) Water moves from dilute solution to concentrated solution Osmotic potential is the total of all dissolved particles Active transport is the movement of all types of molecules across a cell membrane against its concentration gradient (from low to high concentration). In all cells, this is usually concerned with accumulating high concentrations of molecules that the cell needs, such as ions, glucose and amino acids. If the process uses chemical energy, such as from adenosine triphosphate (ATP),
