how do you simplify -18x+9-23x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-18x-23x = -41x then you have then 9. So -41x+9. Just look at the terms next to the coefficients and solve.

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Well first you look at the common unknowns you have. In this case you only have x. So you can carry out operations on the terms that have x like normal numbers. Here, you can add -18x and -23x . Remember that -18x means you have -18 x's and -23x means you have 23 x's. So when you add them, you just add the coefficients(how many x's you have in the end) So, you get what Yondaime commented here.

thank you both very much
