What is the meaning of plagiarism in academic settings? How do I avoid plagiarism in academic writing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Plagiarism is copying word for word what someone else wrote in a text be it published or not...... to avoid it dont copy thier words nd if u must copy only a tiny section and put that section in quotation marks...

Plagiarism is copying another's work and posing it as your own. This is not limited to writing but can also happen when a business steals ideas from another business. To avoid it, always cite all of your sources (a good way is to use http://easybib.com ) and make sure to quote anything that you take directly from the text or paraphrase. A good thing to read about this can be found at http://www.plagiarism.org/ and http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/589/01/ . Remember that in most schools there is an honor code and the school educates you about plagiarism, so there is no excuse that you "didn't know" if you do plagiarize. So make sure you know how NOT to plagiarize or you might get in big trouble! Hope this helps you :D

@Franklin447 "Plagiarism is copying word for word..." It does not have to be word for word. Look at example 3 here: http://www.princeton.edu/pr/pub/integrity/pages/plagiarism/ Here is another good set of examples: http://gervaseprograms.georgetown.edu/honor/system/53501.html
