OpenStudy (anonymous):

When I Was Fair and Young" by Queen Elizabeth I circa 1585 When I was fair and young, then favor graced me. Of many was I sought their mistriss for to be, But I did scorn them all and answered them therefore: Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more. How many weeping eyes I made to pine in woe, How many sighing hearts I have not skill to show, But I the prouder grew and still this spake therefore: Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more. Then spake fair Venus' son, that brave victorious boy, Saying: You dainty dame, for that you be so coy, I will so pluck your plumes as you shall say no more: Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more. As soon as he had said, such change grew in my breast That neither night nor day I could take any rest. Wherefore I did repent that I had said before: Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more.

7) Tones are....regret,mornful,authoritative,unhappy,miserable are some of the tones of the poem. These tones are the best way to describe this poem because this poem is about her reminiscing when she was young and they show regret, and what she had a chance to get but lost and they also show her power and authority. PS There are possibly more than one tone for this poem but its an opinion peice so choose what you can back up with reference to the poem.

thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problemo now on to question 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6) I would say the sentences are predominantly short but there are however a few long ones. The author uses punctuation to slow down the pace of the poem which means we read it slowly and this contributes to the emotional power of the piece by building suspense and magnifying the emotional power. The length creates a rhythm and prevents tedium. Her short sentences magnify the emotional power of the piece, holding up a vision of her overwhelming regret at not making the right choices when she was young, so the reader cannot look away and can sympathize with her.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you rock

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks :) now time for question 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok I noticed she didnt say a specific age in the entire poem or even say the number of men who came to court her.....do you notice anything else she omitted??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5) ok I would say she omitted telling us any figures of the number of men or her age and she even ommitted telling us specific names of men that came to court her to let our imagination run wild. With here being a queen we can then say its probably hundreads of men and this conveys through the piece that she was some sort of a valuable comodity in her time and that she was of great importance and great desire to men.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

with her*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am going to copy question 2 and 4and the poem and paste them here to stop me scrolling up everytime hope u dont mind

4) List the examples of important details the author chose to include. Explain how these details contribute to the emotional power of the piece. She included that this all happened when she was young which leads us to believe that it has stopped now that she is older, if u noticed she also named venus as an example this is meant to be a proof to us sort of like a way of saying she is not lying to us but is stating the truth.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you still there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Diction an author's word choice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@katiebugg1997 want to help us out?? oh btw what grade english is this @Bre_Monee

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10th

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok I am going to attempt to answer the question based on what u told me diction is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://grammar.about.com/od/d/g/disctionterm.htm this site explains what diction means...... so I would say an example of diction in the poem is "favor graced me" this once again illustrates her class and power. a second one is "Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more." this shows that she is very serious about wishing to be left alone......these are the only two I can think of.....not even sure if they are right...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks very much
