how many ways can you put 5 apples to 3 plates

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

Is the answer 21 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If i know the answer i wont ask for it hehe

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yes thats true :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

does each plate need an apple?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

okay, if we assume plates can be left empty, it comes to 6+5+4+3+3+1

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

* 6+5+4+3+2+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (amistre64):

000 , 1 way 500 , 3 ways 410 , 6 ways 311 , 6 ways 302 , 6 ways etc ... unless im totally misreading this

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i spose 400 is 3 ways, 300 is 3ways etc ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for all the answers. I appreciate it

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if plate position is irrelevant ... 000 500 400 300 200 100 110 111 210 211 310 311 410 might cover them?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

221 is missing from that list and prolly a few more ... but i got me a test in a few minutes :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dont over think this problem its my cousins assignment and he is only in 2nd grade

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

omg ! im getting 21 - ive assumed plates can be left empty. i think we can call it 2nd grade, if we constrain that plates must atleast one apple

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

all the best for the test @amistre64 :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

``` 1 : 0 0 5 2 : 0 1 4 3 : 0 2 3 4 : 0 3 2 5 : 0 4 1 6 : 0 5 0 7 : 1 0 4 8 : 1 1 3 9 : 1 2 2 10 : 1 3 1 11 : 1 4 0 12 : 2 0 3 13 : 2 1 2 14 : 2 2 1 15 : 2 3 0 16 : 3 0 2 17 : 3 1 1 18 : 3 2 0 19 : 4 0 1 20 : 4 1 0 21 : 5 0 0 ```
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
if we dont allow empty plates, then its 2nd grade problem :- ``` 1 : 1 1 3 2 : 1 2 2 3 : 1 3 1 4 : 2 1 2 5 : 2 2 1 6 : 3 1 1 ```
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Thanks @ganeshie8
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
np :)
