which of the follwing properties of water would be simportant in protecting a fish in a shallow pond on a hot summer day?

From the information given, I would guess the property would be water's ability to regulate temperature, or its high specific heat. Given that the pond is shallow, you can assume that the total volume of water is relatively small. In addition, the "hot summer" day would indicate a possible danger to fish who would seek homeostasis in their environment. Specific heat is the amount of heat a gram of your molecule can absorb in order to gain 1C in temperature. Because water has a high specific heat, a small amount of water (such as the shallow pond) can essentially absorb a relatively large amount of heat while increasing its temperature by a low amount. Thus, in the described environment, water acts as a buffer for the pond's fish against the external energy coming in from the sun.
