Was never given in vain; 'Tis paid with sighs a plenty And sold for endless rue.' And I am two-and-twenty, And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true.

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

Need help analyzing the tone and imagery in the stanza T^T

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

This is the whole poem: "When I Was One-and-Twenty," by A.E. Housman When I was one-and-twenty I heard a wise man say, 'Give crowns and pound and guineas But not your heart away; Give pearls away and rubies But keep your fancy free.' But I was one-and twenty, No use to talk to me. When I was one-and-twenty I heard him say again, 'The heart out of the bosom Was never given in vain; 'Tis paid with sighs a plenty And sold for endless rue.' And I am two-and-twenty, And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you need to find in the poem?

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

@help123please. need help analyzing the tone and imagery in the last stanza in this: Was never given in vain; 'Tis paid with sighs a plenty And sold for endless rue.' And I am two-and-twenty, And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true.

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

@help123please. thanks for coming to help buddy ^O^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YW.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Tone is how the author approaches the subject.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let me read the whole thing again.

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

@help123please. The poem is about a man who is twenty one who got advice from a wise man, telling him to spend money and give things away, except for your heart. The man didn't listen, but when he turned twenty two the man repeated the same thing to him, and he figures out that the advice he got was true, and pretty good advice.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Indeed. I can se that. Look. http://wheniwasoneandtwenty.blogspot.com/2010/03/meaning-of-when-i-was-one-and-twenty.html

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

@help123please. lol looks like I just wasted our time then XD so the tone for the last lines, Was never given in vain; 'Tis paid with sighs a plenty And sold for endless rue.' And I am two-and-twenty, And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true.

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

I can't figure out if it's happy, or sad, or excited, or anything >.>

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

@help123please. I was just gonna say acknowledged, but u my friend just happen to be smarter than me xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lawl. I'm not,but that's what I think the tone is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're quite welcome. :)

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

@help123please. :D thinking about imagery, we can solve the problem by thinking about which sense the poet wants us to use when reading that last stanza :3 Taste Touch Sight Sound Smell

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you said you're supposed to find imagery in the last stanza ONLY?

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

@help123please. in: Was never given in vain; 'Tis paid with sighs a plenty And sold for endless rue.' And I am two-and-twenty, And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true.

OpenStudy (charlotte123):

@help123please. and Im suppose to analyze it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

KK. Sound,maybe.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can hear the author 'sighing' regretfully,no?
