OpenStudy (anonymous):

why do carbohydrates face away from the cytosol in internal membranes?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

Carbohydrates attached to lipids or proteins in membrane face the ecm side because generally it acts as a signaling receptor or epitope of the cell.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@shrutipande9 yes i know it faces the extracellular fluid outside the cell, but isn't it inside on internal organelles of the cell?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

I m not vry sure...as in I dnt hv an eg where glycoprotein is part of organelle membrane. But if it occurs(ideally it should occur) then u know that proteins need 2 b transported in the organelle. For this glycoprotein acts as a signal...where to exactly transport. This is my guess...

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

The sugars of glycoproteins are exclusively found on the extracellular side of the membrane or topological equivalent
