Compare y=1/2 |x+6| -2 with the parent function y=|x|. Without graphing, what are the vertex, axis of symmetry and transformations of the parent function?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

do you know what |x| looks like?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

where is the axis of symmetry for y=|x|?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm.... Wouldn't it just be in the center? I'm confused.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that |x| is pretty much just 1x.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

the change on the inside will move it the opposite direction left and right. so since we have a +6 on the inside it will move it 6 to the left, so the vertex went from (0,0) to (-6,0), does this make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, that makes sense.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

ok now the -2 on the outside will move us down 2 so now our vertex is (-6,-2)

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

the x value here is also the axis of symmetry x=-6

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

the 1/2 will simply flatten it.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

think about 1/2 |x| you put in 2 you get out 1 where with |x| you put in 2 and get out 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, I got that part.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

thats everything

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Easier than I thought, thank you a bunch!
