factoring by grouping

hero (hero):

Are you going to post the expression you're trying to factor?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2a+b-6a^2-3ab

hero (hero):

-6a^2 -3ab + 2a + b Factor the first two terms then the last two terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanx you

hero (hero):

What did you get for it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im stuck on factoring the last two terms

hero (hero):

There's only one number that is common to the last two

hero (hero):

Think about what happens when you try to factor prime numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be the same ?

hero (hero):

Did you figure out the number yet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If i factor (2a+b) it would be the same because 1 is the greatest common factor

hero (hero):

Okay so you factored out 1 from the last two terms

hero (hero):

So now what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I factor the first two terms and got -3a(2^2+b)?

hero (hero):

-6a^2 -3ab + 2a + b = -3a(2a + b) + 1(2a + b) = (2a + b)(1 - 3a)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you
