If I have a cell that has of 20 chromosomes in prophase, how many chromosomes will there be in metaphase, anaphase, and telophase?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

If u r talkin about mitosis then u get d same no of chromosome. In meiosis it is half.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@shrutipande9 is right! In Mitosis the genetic material is multiplied in interphase, however, there is no increase in amount of chromosome (i.e. one chromosome now has TWO sister chromatids that are identical in every way, but still considered as one chromosome). At the initiation of anaphase, the sister chromatids split, functionally becoming separate chromosomes (so for a brief period the cell has twice as many chromosomes). When the mitotic cell finishes cleavage there is an equal amount of chromosomes in each, so you have the same amount of chromosomes as you put in!
