HELP PLEASE ** How do i figure out the x intercept on a graph? :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you understand what an x intercept is?

hartnn (hartnn):

the points at which the graphs cut the x-axis are x-intercepts! as simple as that :)

hartnn (hartnn):

0,4,-3 absolutely correct! good :)

hartnn (hartnn):

you are learning, its natural to get confused :) but you are doing good, kinda smart :)

hartnn (hartnn):

sure, i will help you for as many Q as u want :)

hartnn (hartnn):

just plug in x=-3 in that expression |2(-3)+1| + 5 = .... ?

hartnn (hartnn):

nopes, how ?

hartnn (hartnn):

do you know the significance of |...|, the absolute value sign ?

hartnn (hartnn):

not opposite, it will make any negative sign as positive!! (positive remains positive) examples, |-20| = 20, |-3| = 3 |44| = 44 got this ?

hartnn (hartnn):

note that the |....| is not for -3 !! its for the value of 2(-3) +1 so first tell me whats 2 (-3) +1 = ... ?

hartnn (hartnn):

right! now we have a |....|, so whats |-5| = ... ?

hartnn (hartnn):

correct! and the last part gives you final answer as 10 , which is correct :)

hartnn (hartnn):

any doubts in any step ? clearly understood the thing ?

hartnn (hartnn):

welcome ^_^

hartnn (hartnn):

nobody is bad at math, you just need some practice :) then you will be able to solve even difficult Questions mentally ;) i bet!

hartnn (hartnn):

you were able to understand this problem properly, that means you can also do similar problems on your own, right ? thats enough to be good at math :)

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, i can

hartnn (hartnn):

absolutely correct! see, you are good already :D

hartnn (hartnn):

do few problems of same type and you will never doubt yourself for that type of question again ;)

hartnn (hartnn):

good luck!
