6+x/2=4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Is the equation \[\large 6 + \frac{x}{2} = 4\] OR is the equation \[\large \frac{6+x}{2} = 4\] ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the top one you have down

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so this one \[\large 6 + \frac{x}{2} = 4\] right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok thanks just checking

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

First you subtract 6 from both sides After that, you multiply both sides by 2 to fully isolate x \[\large 6 + \frac{x}{2} = 4\] \[\large 6+\frac{x}{2}-6 = 4-6\] \[\large \frac{x}{2} = -2\] \[\large 2*\frac{x}{2} = 2*(-2)\] \[\large x = -4\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much. Would you be willing to help with some more problems?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure just a few more though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we only have four left

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok 4 is definitely doable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay thank you! 9+n/4=15

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the equation is \[\large 9 + \frac{n}{4} = 15\] right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if so, then go ahead and use the steps I've shown above and try it out for yourself and see what you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did, I got -9 is that right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

first you subtracted 9 from both sides right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

obviously, I'm dumb.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you are NOT dumb, so get that silly idea out of your head

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you subtract 9 from both sides, you get \[\large 9 + \frac{n}{4} = 15\] \[\large 9 + \frac{n}{4} - 9 = 15 - 9\] \[\large \frac{n}{4} = 6\] what's next?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you're not sure, then what undoes division? what operation is the opposite of division?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 6x4= 24 meaning n=24?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good, you multiply both sides by 4 to isolate n so n = 24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thank you for helping us.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure thing, did you need any more help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, I have one that is -7+4r=-15 and then one that is m/16-9=-8

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok let's start with -7+4r=-15

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what's first step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract 7 from both sides?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

close, but -7+4r is really the same as 4r - 7

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so how do you undo that -7?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what undoes subtraction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

addition?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you need to add 7 to both sides

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-7+4r=-15 4r - 7 = -15 4r - 7 + 7 = -15 + 7 ... add 7 to both sides 4r= -8 ... Combine like terms. what's next?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

notice how on the left side the -7 and the +7 add to this -7 + 7 = 0 and that 0 goes away

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so that's why we're adding 7 to both sides
